Little Lewis

Lynchburg, VA’s Megatone label is one of my favourite little labels – I’ve not heard a dud 45 from them yet. They are all difficult-  and expensive – to buy as very small quantities of each disc was pressed. This one is even more obscure than most of them. The uptempo “Next In Line” is a lively slab of R & B on which Lewis rides the rhythm really well – just check out those falsetto phrases. The other side is a fine version of ListenHow I Feel, best known for the version by its writer Robert Tanner. Lewis gives a fine heartfelt performance on this one as well – gritty and soulful - maybe even better than Tanner’s interpretation. Interestingly, judging by the catalogue number it was recorded first. As with the other 45s on this label, the music is provided by the Jivers, who went on to become the New Sound, whose Turbo LP is highly sought after.

Could this be Melvin Lewis? It certainly sonds a lot like him.
