I didn't know how happy I could be - CHERIE 506Vera Powell

This desperate piece of deep soul was co-written and co-produced by that great man of music, William Bell so it may well have been cut in Atlanta. Vera has a suitably hard edge to her tone, rather in the manner of Shirley Brown, as she goes through the hell of the lyrics. She’s backed up by a classic southern soul band, with a special tip of the hat for the sensitivity of the pianist and guitarist.

The date for this 45 is 1976 which only goes to show that you could find real soul in the middle of the disco boom if you looked hard enough.
